Threads of the Past: Our Visit to The Mills

On 11 May and 13 May, S2 students participated in an English Language Excursion to The Mills in Tsuen Wan. The excursion aims to deepen students’ understanding of the importance of cultural revitalisation and heritage preservation in Hong Kong through touring the unique architectural features and facilities at The Mills.

The excursion reminded me to reflect on the importance of cultural preservation in Hong Kong. I was fascinated by the local products and exhibitions that showed the development of Hong Kong’s historical textile industry and highlighted why cultural preservation is essential to all of us. It is not just about keeping traditions, but it is also vital to maintaining cultural security and passing on our local culture to the next generation. Through preserving our culture, we will have a greater sense of national identity and will not forget our roots, helping us build a better community based on our shared heritage.

This excursion to The Mills allowed us to learn about history and traditions through preserving heritage sites and works of the past. Marvelling at the variety and quality of textile products was only the tip of the iceberg, as the true significance of cultural preservation is its ability to bring our community together. We can also show gratitude to the lives we have now by reflecting on the hardships of those who built our society. By reflecting on the diverse cultures of our history, we pass on old traditions while also creating new ones, making Hong Kong a better home day by day.

I believe cultural preservation is critical for Hong Kong. Our city changes so fast that it is easy to forget what people experienced in the past. Learning about the workers who spent many hours in the historical textile factory reminds us to work hard and be thankful for the lives we have now. Without these heritage sites, our city would lose its unique soul and character. By preserving places like The Mills, we keep our history alive, which not only makes us feel more connected to our city and heritage, but also helps us create a future that respects our roots.

The Mills preserves history by retaining and showcasing authentic factory infrastructure, such as old cotton spinning machines and metal shutters. Rather than hiding these industrial remnants, The Mills integrates them into visitors’ experience, allowing people to directly interact with the facilities that once powered Hong Kong’s textile industry, which keeps the memories and history alive. The preservation and revitalisation of The Mills ground Hong Kong’s identity in something real, reminding us that Hong Kong used to be a home to factories and factory workers who built the city with their bare hands.
