The Stepping Stones to Self-Discovery: S4 Interest Classes

By 4L Jophy Yau

As an S4 student, I was given the invaluable opportunity to participate in a series of interest classes organised by our school. Across six weeks, my classmates and I were assigned to one of nine unique and equally intriguing classes, not just to enrich our educational voyage, but also to explore more about ourselves while developing new pursuits and skills for our future endeavours.

Throughout March and April, I was assigned to the Astronomy Beginners Course, where I was taught fascinating knowledge regarding the sun, moon, and stars. I was exposed to a vast amount of content beyond our atmosphere in ways that went beyond ordinary PowerPoints and textbooks, such as viewing astrological signs through immersive projections and even assembling a pair of astronomy binoculars by hand.

My friends had exhilarating experiences in other classes as well. For instance, a friend from the Planting Class grew vegetables on the rooftop through their own efforts, and another from the Pet Industry Experience Class had real interactions with adorable pets, applying their knowledge in realistic scenarios.

These lessons offered us precious chances to gain real-life skills via hands-on learning, such as self-defence skills from the Muay Thai Introductory Class, communication strategies from the French Language and Culture Experience Class, and technological insights from the Ceramic 3D Printing Class and the list goes on and on.

Not only that, but it has guided many of us to venture into unexplored territories and delve into new pursuits. A friend of mine recently took up making plushies stitch by stitch after participating in the Chinese Handicraft Workshop, while another became increasingly active in volunteer work after joining the Volunteer Training Course. Meanwhile, a classmate from the Calligraphy Class contributed some beautiful Fai Chuns to our classroom.

All of this goes to show that these interest classes are not merely a blip in time; they have directed us towards understanding ourselves, shaping our identity, and encouraging us to grow our hobbies into something physical and meaningful. Six lessons may not appear like much to some, yet they have certainly made a great impact on our self-discovery journey. Through experiential learning, these interest classes have given us exclusive adventures and taught us skills not through words, but through actions, leading us to build ourselves up and make worthy contributions to society in the future.
