OLE Talk: The Dangers of ‘Space Oil’

On 21st February 2025, the Guidance Team invited the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong Tin Shui Wai District Youth Outreaching Social Work Team to give a talk on ‘Space Oil’ (太空油) for all S2 students.

The aim of the talk was to raise awareness about the dangers of this emerging drug and educate students about its risks. The session started with interactive activities to engage the students, followed by a clear explanation of what “Space Oil” is, its chemical makeup, and its effects on the body. The talk emphasized that the drug can cause temporary unconsciousness and lead to serious health issues, including addiction, hormonal imbalances, and long-term brain damage, especially in young users. A survey of 80 youths in Tin Shui Wai and North District showed that many teenagers use ‘Space Oil’ due to peer pressure, curiosity, or as a way to cope with stress and emotional challenges. The talk also clarified common misconceptions, such as the belief that the drug is harmless or non-addictive. Through real-life scenarios and role-playing, students learned how to resist peer pressure and say no to drugs.

The session ended with resources for seeking help, highlighting the importance of professional support and open communication with trusted adults. Overall, the talk was an essential step in equipping students with the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices.
