Gifts of Love: Warming the Community this Mid-Autumn

By 3J Charis Iu

On 19 September, I took part in a meaningful community service activity that left me with a deeply memorable experience to reflect upon.

Before visiting the residential area in Hung Shui Kiu, we joined a workshop where we learned to make small potted plants. During the workshop, volunteers from the very residences we were going to visit taught us how to make them. We wrapped each plant with moss and string, creating an easy-to-care-for potted plant. These handmade plants were later given as gifts to the people we visited. After the workshop, we were divided into groups and went to Eminence Tower I to conduct the home visits.

During the visits, we met various residents and chatted with them. We gave them the potted plants we had made and wished them well. Although the conversations were simple, I could see that many of them were happy to have someone to talk to. It reminded me that small gestures of care can profoundly impact others.

Personally, I found this experience incredibly rewarding. While making the plants was fun, seeing the smiles on the residents’ faces was even more meaningful. I learned that community service is not just about giving gifts, but about spending time and showing genuine concern. I hope we can participate in more activities like this in the future and continue to spread warmth to those in need.
