During the OLE period on 15 May, all S3 students attended a meaningful talk about love and life, hosted by Ms Tang from the Hong Kong Catholic Marriage Advisory Council.
Reflecting on the talk about abortion, reproductive activities, and relationships between people in love left me with a profound sense of how deeply personal these issues truly are. A particularly captivating moment featured a video showing the intricate, ten‑month development of a human fetus. Witnessing those detailed stages of pregnancy firsthand really grounded the room, highlighting the intense emotional impact that comes with carrying a life, or facing the choice not to.
The real‑life experiences shared by the speakers brought much‑needed nuance to the stage. Hearing their personal stories made it clear that the impacts of abortion are heavy and complex. Decisions surrounding reproductive activities are never made in a vacuum; they are intimately tied to a person’s mental well‑being, financial stability, and immediate healthcare access.
Not to be neglected is the importance of a healthy relationship. It is a continuous journey of choosing the person you will love forever, the person with whom you continue the journey. Love is not just about physical activities, but rather about emotional support, feelings for others, and caring for your partner.
Ultimately, while the talk touched on the long‑term responsibility of raising a child, the core takeaway focused on the profound psychological journey of pregnancy. We need fewer rigid dogmas and more comprehensive support for the emotional realities individuals face. Empathy must always precede policy.
