Beyond the Rules: My Journey at the Mock Trial Workshop

3L Benson Lam

My second year on the Mock Trial Team kicked off with an amazing pre-tournament workshop, where we dove straight into law and critical thinking. Unlike the usual problem-solving activities we did last year, this time we tackled a super intense ethical debate: is it legally and morally right to separate conjoined twins if only one of them can survive?

To build our arguments, my teammates and I spent hours debating each other, reading through legal documents, and analysing expert opinions. It was challenging, but eye-opening to see how complex a single case can be. Before wrapping up the half-day event, we had the honour of listening to Judge Yau. He shared his personal journey of becoming a judge, and gave us invaluable advice for our upcoming competitions. He also explained more about the conjoined twins’ case, which really broadened my horizons on how law and ethics connect.

Ultimately, this workshop taught me that law is not just a rigid set of rules meant to keep us safe and maintain a harmonious society. Instead, its true purpose is to ensure fairness, and protect equality for everyone who needs it. I cannot wait to apply these lessons in our next trial!
