A Celebration of Spirit, Sportsmanship, and Legacy

The Annual Athletic Meet of Shung Tak Catholic English College unfolded over two inspiring days on 16 and 17 March at Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground. Blessed with clear skies, a refreshing breeze, and mild sunshine, the event enjoyed ideal weather that ensured comfort for all participants and spectators.

The Meet opened with the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag of China and the school flag, symbolising unity and pride. This was followed by the athletes’ oath, solemnly delivered by the Sports Captain of the Students’ Union, who pledged fair play, respect, and dedication. Principal Ms Norris Lai then officially declared the Annual Athletic Meet open.

Over the two days, the four Houses – St. John (Blue), St. James (Red), St. Patrick (Green), and St. Andrew (Yellow) – competed fiercely amid enthusiastic cheers from students vying for house and class glory. Highlights included the invitation relay, in which Ms Lai teamed up with students and secured second place, while a group of alumni known as Across the Years claimed the gold medal.

The Guest of Honour was Ms Ma Lai Zee Emily, a revered figure who dedicated nearly four decades of her career to Shung Tak. She taught Physical Education and English with exceptional passion and skill, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. Now serving as a Director overseeing nursery and kindergarten education across three schools, Ms Ma continues to inspire young learners with the same dedication, leadership, and vision that defined her 39 years at STC. Her lifelong commitment to physical education, character building, and unlocking every student’s potential remains a beacon for many in the Yuen Long area.

In a heartfelt address, Ms Ma shared personal reflections on recent health challenges, underscoring the vital role of exercise in sustaining both physical and mental well‑being throughout life. She spoke movingly of the awakening she experienced during difficult times and urged everyone to prioritise fitness. As a proud alumna and long‑serving teacher, she affirmed, “Shung Tak means everything to me; my heart will always remain here.”

In tribute to Ms Ma’s service, many alumni and retired staff returned to show their support. Mr Joseph Kung, Principal of STC from 2011 to 2018 and current Episcopal Delegate of Education at the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, also demonstrated his support for Ms Ma by attending the event. He graciously presented prizes to the individual outstanding athletes in the Prize Giving Ceremony.

This year’s results reflected outstanding team spirit and performance, with St. John Blue House crowned Boys’ Overall Champion and St. James Red House winning the Girls’ Overall Champion title. The Overall Champion of this year’s Meet was St. James Red House.

The Closing Ceremony brought the event to a joyful conclusion with the traditional “Hip Hip Hurray!” As the national flag was lowered, participants and spectators reflected on two memorable days that reunited old friends, welcomed new ones, and reaffirmed the timeless values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.

The Annual Athletic Meet 2025–26 proved to be far more than a competition; once again, it was a powerful celebration of the energetic and enduring spirit of Shung Tak.
