Bringing together Tradition and Modernism
Study Tour to Osaka & Kyoto 2018
Forty students from S3 - S.5 and four teachers joined the 6-day study tour to Kyoto and Osaka from 28th June to 3rd July organized by the BAFS and History Departments.
We had the great experience of being welcomed by Shyonan Rinku High School. Our students joined lessons with the Japanese students and shared their hobbies and talked more about their daily lives. We also participated in their club activities like the tea ceremony, kendo; and also played table-tennis and basketball with the students there. All of us had great fun and certainly the memories of those experiences are unforgettable.
Having the chance to wear the kimono, the traditional Japanese dress, was another enjoyable and memorable experience. The Kimono is the Japanese traditional costume. Wearing kimono and walking down Kiyomizu-dera, made us feel as we were one of the local Japanese making a formal visit to the shrines. The Japanese no longer dress this way in everyday life as after the Meiji Modernization, western clothes replaced it as everyday wear.
We also learned about Shintoism, the traditional Japanese religion. In the study tour, we visited many famous shrines in Kyoto.
Cup noodles, we all know and eat this. We had the fortune of being able to visit the cup noodles museum, and design our own cup noodles. All of us used our wonderful drawing skills to make our unique cup noodles as souvenirs. We also learned about the development of Nissin Company from a local enterprise to a multi-national enterprise.
Through visiting the famous historical sites and enterprises, we learned more about the history of Japan; and the culture of their corporations, and development of Japanese enterprises.
The experience for the students has indeed broadened their horizons as they partook of activities beyond the traditional classroom.
